Box 2008 Oak Ridge, TN 37831 ABSTRACT Lead zirconate titanate (F’ZT) materials have short piezoelectric response times, low power consumption, and can be made in compact shapes. These properties make them potential candidates for actuators in automotive applications. An important issue with PZT materials, especially for the automotive industry, is reliability. It is generally accepted that the reliability of PZT materials are strongly affected by the quality of the green PZT preforms.

This process was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for forming high strength, uniform, ceramic preforms. This method has been employed with many ceramic materials including alumina, silicon, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, and boron carbide. lo Gelcast forming can employ water or organic solvents. ” The present study was conducted to determine whether gelcast forming can be used to fabricate high quality PZT materials, and to compare these materials to samples fabricated by die pressing and tape casting processes.
